4 Indian Wedding Themes Every South Asian Bride Ought To Know About

When it comes to themes, you can go totally out of the box, or you can choose a classic look that’s easy to execute, and is sure to be a hit with everyone young and old. Weddings can be so stressful, why not cut yourself a little slack and pick a theme that will be easy to work with and provides a lot of options for décor?

In my role as Editor at PlanShaadi.com I spend a lot of time scrolling through pictures from real weddings and researching the latest trends in Indian nuptials. As much as I love something unique and new, I’m also a big fan of classic touches at a desi wedding.

Here’re four ideas to get you started.

Peacock

Not only is it a classic, but the colours used in a peacock theme are stunning. You don’t have to be literal in your approach either – try bright blue ink on your invitations with green envelopes. Or, have your bridesmaids wear gold salwar kameez with a peacock coloured dupatta.

When it comes to décor, there is no shortage of peacock inspired centrepieces, floral arrangements, and even backdrops. If you need some inspiration, you can check out this post for more ideas.

Red & Gold

This color combination is an all-time classic Indian wedding theme. Red and gold has been overlooked a lot in recent years because it was used so much in the 90’s and in some pretty tacky ways.  However, if you think about it like a red Valentino dress with gold Tiffany jewels its pure perfection!

Elephant

Indians and elephants – it’s a perfect match! Not only is elephant décor pretty simple to track down, many families also think of the elephant as lucky. If you decide to go with an elephant theme you can also easily incorporate mirrors, bead work, and other traditional Indian handicrafts.

Most Indian decorators will have a stock of elephant related décor, but it’s also fairly easy to find online or at places like Homesense or Target, just check in regularly and you are sure to see something. You can also find some great ideas for creating an elephant inspired wedding here.

Rajasthani

A traditional Rajasthani theme would have lots of bandini, mirror work, and ‘matka’ (water jug) related décor. One of my favourite things about Rajasthani décor is the all the different colours that are used, there’s no need to stick with just one or two colours – go all out!

You could easily get your groomsmen to wear bandhini pagris, and your bridesmaids could carry colourful umbrellas. The Rajasthani theme is all about tradition. Try decorating votive candle holders with bangles or bindis, serve drinks in copper glasses, and encourage guests to dress the part too!

Hopefully these ideas for wedding themes have inspired you to create a classic Indian look for your wedding.
